Alpo Dog Food

The Alpo Dog Food brand was first founded in 1936 in a small town in Pennsylvania. It is now made by the Nestle Purina PetCare Company, who took over the brand nearly 70 years after its inception. Today, Alpo currently makes a few types of dry food and several varieties of wet foods for pet owners to choose from.

Alpo Dry Dog Food

Alpo dog food is available in dry kibble as well as canned and packaged soft foods. One of the company's most popular dry dog foods is the Prime Cuts Savory Beef Flavor. It's available in four different sizes: 4, 17.6, 40, and 50-pound bags.

The first five ingredients in the Prime Cuts Savory Beef type of dry dog food from Alpo are corn, beef and bone meal, soybean meal, beef tallow, and animal digest. As we know, canines are largely carnivores that require a certain amount of protein from meat sources in order to be at their healthiest. Thus, these five ingredients have raised more than a few eyebrows when it comes to what's best for a canine's health.

Corn is an ingredient commonly found in Alpo dog food products and to canines, it is mostly an indigestible grain. Soybean meal, another primary ingredient, is a low quality protein that many people suspect leads to allergies in dogs that manifest themselves in the form of digestive issues and skin problems.

Animal digest has been deemed one of the things to avoid when it comes to choosing a quality dog food, as it includes a number of unsavory ingredients. However, it is included in many brands and types of pet foods. According to the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials), the non-profit organization that sets standards for pet foods in the US, animal digest may contain unspecified animal parts including 4-D animals, which stands for dead, disabled, diseased, or dying as well as road kill and animal parts from those who were euthanized at shelters.

Alpo Wet Dog Food

Alpo also makes several wet foods for dogs, one of the most popular being their Chop House in Gourmet Gravy line that includes three different flavors: T-bone steak, beef tenderloin, and rotisserie chicken in either 13.2 or 22-ounce cans. Other well known products are the Homestyle Prime Cuts in Gravy, which comes in seven flavors, and the Prime Slices in Gravy, which are available in four flavors. Alpo's Classic Chunky formula is another wet food intended for adult dogs and comes in two flavors: beef or chicken. Their Classic Ground also comes in beef as well as a chicken and rice formula intended for puppies.

Most Popular Alpo Dog Food choices

Three of the most popular types of Alpo dog foods based on consumer opinion, ingredients, and price include Prime Cuts Savory Beef dry food, which sells for around $13 for the 17.6-pound size and $33 for the 50-pound bag, the Prime Cuts in Gravy with Beef Stew, which sells for roughly $28 for 24 13.2-ounce cans, and the Chop House Rotisserie Chicken flavored canned food, which costs around $26 for a case of 24 13-ounce cans.
